Music and Me

Hello, I’m Haley Jackson and I am a sophomore majoring in Psychology with a minor in Music. I'm from Walterboro South Carolina, I have two dogs and two cats. I originally came to Converse to pursue a Music Therapy but that didn’t exactly go to plan… but my love of music is still strong! I can play the trumpet, piano, and guitar although one of these instruments is my arch nemesis. Currently, I am not in any ensembles and no longer play the trumpet as we broke up earlier last year. Here is a picture of me and one of my dogs Autumn (this is the only decent recent photo I have sorry <3)

1. These days I have really been into Fragile by Laufey, it's something that I have been humming all week and is a great opening to her album Everything I Know About Love. I love her vocals and the soft guitar in her songs they make me feel so cozy and aesthetic. I initially found her music through TikTok sound using her song From The Start and fell in love with her music ever since! I also have been jamming to Falling Behind, Beautiful Stranger, and Above The Chinese Restaurant by Laufey.

2. One song that is deeply meaningful to me is Our Page by SHINee. SHINee is a K-pop group that I enjoy listening to and they debuted with five members in 2008. Unfortunately, in December 2017, one of their members, Jonghyun, who had been suffering from mental health issues committed suicide in his apartment. The song Our Page is dedicated to Jonghyun and the good memories the group had with him. It resonates with me not only as a fan but as someone who also struggles with some of the same issues. This song never fails to make me cry every time I see the empty fifth mic stand.

3. A song that I don't quite understand is IDOL feat. Nicki Minaj by BTS. I just feel like the style of the song does not support the feature. I really enjoy both of these artists individuals and I feel that their styles do not mesh well together. Up until this song was released I was a rather large BTS fan and feel that this song was the start of the marketing more toward American fans and in doing so the music became more surface level and less meaningful.

4. I enjoy lots of different kinds of music and are interested in many different genres but one of my all-time favorites is silly songs. Personally, I try to be a very silly and humorous person and when I find even goofier music it brings me much joy.  My favorite has to be Jort Storm by Slimecicle. It's a song that was created for a DND podcast intro and has many punts about jorts or jean shorts. Some honorable mentions for silly songs are HERE COMES THE hURRICAN LEGENDARY KATRINA by Kevin Jz Prodigy, Bananaphone by Raffi, His Cheeseburger by VeggieTales, and many more.

  1. I have also been really into Laufey lately! Her songs have such a nice vibe and are always fun to listen to. I also don’t quite understand the feature in IDOL. The styles of BTS and Nicki Minaj are very different and just don’t fit great together. Also I love the His Cheesburger mention, that was one of my favorite Veggie Tales songs when I was a kid.

  2. I too am a fan of Laufey's music! She has a very unique tone that does have a very cozy feeling to it. Since you have just recently discovered her, you should definitely listen to her first album. "Magnolia" is one of my favs. I also agree with you on the song "IDOL". I too do not connect with that song and feel that the song does not match the feature.

  3. First off, we have like the same college set up, I was going to be a music therapy major. However then realized sticking to a major in psych would do me better. I've personally never done much exploring into the BTS genre, but I had no idea that it could get so heavy in a sense of saying. Also Banana Phone is probably one of the best songs hands down and it has ingrained itself into my psyche.

  4. Laufey is one of my favorite artists! I had no idea you liked her music too :) I love her cover of "Misty", and my favorite song by her is probably "From the Start", or maybe "Valentine", or maybe "Falling Behind", or maybe... you get the idea lol. I see some of the other commenters also enjoy her music- we should all have a Laufey listening party sometime, haha! I also agree about "IDOL". I've heard a bit of each separate artist/ group's music before and i don't dislike their music apart, but listening to a combination of BTS and Nikki Minaj just felt weird to me.

  5. I liked the duality between Laufey and BTS, I think it's very interesting but I'd want to know if they were on the same playlist or if you have to wait a while between listening because the vibes are so different. Both songs are bangers regardless.

  6. I am really enjoying Fragile by Laufey. I have never heard her music, but this will also be quickly added to my playlist. I really like the softness of it and the harmonies that are sprinkled in there. I have never really listened to BTS, but I am also not a big fan of this song also. Just the little I do know about them, this seems a bit out there for them.
