Big Blog 2: Luk Thung/ Thai Country

Image
What is Luk Thung? Phleng Luk Thung, more commonly known as Thai Country music is a music genre started in Thailand in the early 1900’s. The term Luk Thung in Thai means Child of the Fields which refers to people who grew up in rural countryside areas. Luk thung is made up of themes of Thai culture, values, country lifestyle, and social challenges from the perspective of working-class people, particularly those from rural areas. This genre can be traced back to Eua Sunthornsanan who was a Thai singer and composer. He introduced Western music into Thai culture which would eventually turn into Phleng Thai Sakon or international-style Thai music. This genre incorporates Western instruments and Thai traditional music. It would eventually find its way to the countryside leading to the birth of Luk Thung. Singers at the beginning of this genre such as Kamron Samboonnanon and Suraphol Sombutchareon were referred to as Nak Rong Talad or down-to-earth singers as they wrote songs in a ...

Music and Family

Image
I interviewed my dad to get his perspective and personal preferences on music. My father's name is David Jackson, born on December 31st, 1969. He currently works for an electrical company and is a Baptist preacher on the side. I first asked him what kind of music he’s into these days and he said 80’s music, he mainly listens to 80’s rock, indie, and alternative. Music does not play a big role in his life although he enjoys it he said that he does not have to have it to survive. His favorite bands from when he was younger were The Eagles, Guns n Roses, White Snake, and Boston with the occasional Limp Bizkit. David's music taste hasn’t changed very much since he was younger other than that he is now more into Christian music. He finds it very interesting that the music that grew up with is still popular amongst the younger generation today.  From the 1970s to today technology has come a long way and my dad has gotten to experience it from analog to digital. He first started with ...

Big Blog 1: Disco 💃

Image
The genre of disco emerged in the early 1970s primarily in New York City and Philadelphia. The term disco was derived from the dance-oriented nightclubs called discotheque that appeared in the 1960s. Disco was a genre that got its main exposure from catering to gay, black, and Latino dancers in underground nightclubs The most popular nightclubs for disco in the 70s were Studio 54, The Loft, and Paradise Garage. The genre was initially ignored by radio stations and was taken in by creative deejays who were a major force in the start of the genre. Deejay helped to establish hit songs and encouraged focusing on singles which led to a new subindusty of 12-inch extended play singles that evolved to meet the needs of club deejays. Pre-existing genres like funk, salsa, and soul fed into the genre of disco, primarily the syncopation of funk, the melodies and rhythms of soul, and the polyrhythms of salsa. One of the first hit disco songs was Gloria Gaynor’s Never Can Say Goodbye , release...

Music and Gender

Image
Music and gender are two concepts that have been intertwined for a very long time from early civilization when only men were allowed to play music to today where certain genres of music have an expectation of what gender their audience is. I have personally seen music and gender interact the most in my early years of being in the marching band.  This is me and my brother during my first year in marching band When you start band, usually in middle school, they have you pick out an instrument that you want to try. From here instruments are unintentionally considered masculine and feminine by other students and sometimes directors. For example, woodwind instruments are typically considered more feminine, whereas brass instruments are more masculine. For persecution, the more melodic instruments, like the piano or marimba, are considered more feminine, whereas the more rhythmic instruments, like snare or bass drum, are considered more masculine. With time some instruments in a particul...

Music and Rituals

Image
One ritual I have attended for many years is my church's candlelight service. On Christmas Eve, my church does a service where we light candles and worship. Preparation for this event starts sometime in early December when members of the congregation decorate the church with a Christmas tree, branches of holly and cedar, candles, wreaths, and poinsettias. Each Sunday leading up to Christmas Eve, one of the four advent candles, representing love, joy, peace, and hope, is lit until Christmas Eve when the center candle, representing Christ, is lit. Before the service begins, there is traditional religious Christmas music playing, such as Holy Night, Away in a Manger, Angles We Have Heard on High, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, and/ or O Come All Ye Faithfull, as people come into the church. If the church has access to a pianist they will play the instrumental version of these songs, if not, a CD will be played through the speakers instead. Once the service starts there is no more mus...

Music and Me

Image
Hello, I’m Haley Jackson and I am a sophomore majoring in Psychology with a minor in Music. I'm from Walterboro South Carolina, I have two dogs and two cats. I originally came to Converse to pursue a Music Therapy but that didn’t exactly go to plan… but my love of music is still strong! I can play the trumpet, piano, and guitar although one of these instruments is my arch nemesis. Currently, I am not in any ensembles and no longer play the trumpet as we broke up earlier last year. Here is a picture of me and one of my dogs Autumn (this is the only decent recent photo I have sorry <3) 1. These days I have really been into Fragile by Laufey, it's something that I have been humming all week and is a great opening to her album Everything I Know About Love . I love her vocals and the soft guitar in her songs they make me feel so cozy and aesthetic. I initially found her music through TikTok sound using her song From The Start and fell in love with her music ever since! I al...
