Music and Family

I interviewed my dad to get his perspective and personal preferences on music. My father's name is David Jackson, born on December 31st, 1969. He currently works for an electrical company and is a Baptist preacher on the side. I first asked him what kind of music he’s into these days and he said 80’s music, he mainly listens to 80’s rock, indie, and alternative. Music does not play a big role in his life although he enjoys it he said that he does not have to have it to survive. His favorite bands from when he was younger were The Eagles, Guns n Roses, White Snake, and Boston with the occasional Limp Bizkit. David's music taste hasn’t changed very much since he was younger other than that he is now more into Christian music. He finds it very interesting that the music that grew up with is still popular amongst the younger generation today.

From the 1970s to today technology has come a long way and my dad has gotten to experience it from analog to digital. He first started with the record player when he was a little kid but spent the majority of his teenage and young adult life with cassette tapes and analog radio, his middle adulthood had digital radio and today we can look up music online. His favorite genres are the 80s and Christian music, he doesn’t have a least favorite genre but he does dislike heavy metal music with artists like Korn.

It gets really good around 2:38

Davids has only been to a few concerts in his time and the last one he went to was at the Ladson Fairground in Summerville where Lynyrd Skynyrd was played. When asked what his earliest musical experience and he said that remembered listening to John Elton’s song Crokicdile Rock and that it was his favorite at the time.

David went to college a little later than most but remembered taking a music history class. When I asked if he had ever played an instrument he said no and that he had always wanted to but never had the talent or discipline to learn. He has always wanted to play the guitar and said that it has a beautiful sound. When I was growing up we had a guitar in the house that was his but he never played. Eventually when COVID hit my brother decided to start learning guitar and when I went to college it came with me.

Although David has never played an instrument he sang in the church choir when he was young and actively participated in the choir at his church. Other church members and he like to joke around a lot and have a good time. Around Christmas time our church has a dinner where we exchange gifts for the children and give gag gifts. The choir members always joke with each other saying that they can't sing very well and this past year they got my dad a silly gift which was a cheap set of bongos.

We ended the interview by talking about the importance of music. David feels that music has much importance and the ability to enhance emotion, bring people together, and motivate and unite people. He enjoys experiencing different types of cultures exactly through their music and feels that we should embrace diversity at every turn.

  1. That's so cool how your dad went to college at the same time you did! also your dad seems funny and cool, but what's funny is my dad was born like less than a year later and one of his least favorite bands is Limp Bizkit it's kinda funny how taste among even the same age and demographic can be rather different.

  3. Good pictures! Your dad seems like a really cool guy. It's cool that while he is not an active musician, it's still something important to him and I like his thoughts on it.

  4. I liked your pictures, especially the one where he is in the floor. I thought the cheap bongos that your dad's choir gave him was really cute and funny. He has really good music taste and I love that "Crocodile Rock" is a song that your dad loved when he was younger. That song goes so hard.
